Comfy Cozy Adult Walls

Well another piece of manna with no date… This one is sermon notes left in my Bible by my daughter.  From the note paper I can tell it was at Celebration Church, Aliso Viejo, CA sometime after 2008.

Melissa’s notes start with a definition of the power of God at work in our lives as a heart open and vulnerable with an eye of innocent expectation. Simply stated… being child-like unlocks God’s power in our lives. Melissa goes on to write, as we age we forget this part of lives and get comfortable relying on ourselves.  This comfy-ness makes its way into many parts of our lives until we forget we need God to be our Father and we forget to be child-like.

Comfy-ness can also show itself in the way we try to protect ourselves. We avoid anything unpleasant; hence the commonly used term “comfort-zone”.  We try to live happily in our well-built carefully controlled Adult comfort zones. But, Melissa’s sermon notes tell us that is ok to be uncomfortable when we don ‘t know what God’s doing – faith and faithfulness are not contingent upon feelings, age or “spiritual prosperity”.  Instead, it’s a commitment to seeking truth. Even if the truth is you’ve done something wrong.  It’s wrong to deny the truth about a situation and try to skirt the consequences. That’s when walls get built and comfort zones get established to protect and avoid.

People will always look at you and either see the truth and forgive or only see the wrong you’ve done. But your responsibility – especially as a representative of Christ – is not to other people, it’s only to God and your relationship with Him. If you feel like there is a wall between you and God being open and vulnerable with Him in prayer is the only way to knock it down.  Tangibly, prayer is the only way to build up faith and reset the roles of Father and child.

**Lord, let me see my heart.  Forgive me for the walls I’ve created to feel comfortable and help me break them down so I can be closer to you.  Show me the areas where I’ve grown up too much and forgotten my place as your child.  Renew my faith and innocent expectation for your power in my life.  I commit today to seek truth.**
