In 1991 my Mom was a
guest speaker at a Women’s Conference and the topic was “Set Free to Be”. At the conference she shared that we have a
choice; we can live according to the plan of darkness or we can live according
to His plan (God).
Many of us have seasons of moving away from God and not living in His plan. What takes us away? Stress, relationships, personal desires,
temptations? Each of these are things that create opportunities to make choices
between sucumming to the circumstances or holding fast to God instead but the
bottom line is these destractions are all rooted in the plan of darkness. Choices aren’t always as simple as heads or tails, black or
white; which can make them difficult to see them as choices. Especially when we
are swayed by the judgement of people, our own emotions, and the internal
struggle with our innate human nature.
But, today can be a
new day. And the day after that can be a
new day, and the day after that too! We never have to live in the darkness,
even if we created it ourselves. Each day is a new beginning for God. “That’s
the power of love!” As the musical
artist Huey Lewis would say… Hear also part of a song of a father at the birth
of his son found in Luke chapter 1.
"When Zacharias’s voice was restored to him, he sang from the fullness of the Holy Spirit a blessing. ** May the Lord God of Israel be blessed indeed! For God’s intervention has begun, and He has moved to rescue us (me), the people (child) of God…. the Lord’s people (I) will receive knowledge of their (my) freedom through the forgiveness of their (my) sins. All this will flow from the kind and compassionate mercy of our (my) God. A new day is dawning: the Sunrise from the heavens will break through our (my) darkness, and those (even though I) who huddle (have huddled) in night, those who sit (and sat) in the shadow of death, (I) will be able to rise and walk in the light guided in the pathway of peace.”
From this passage we
can see the enormous amount of love God has for us, His children. He too sings
over us (Zephaniah 3) and His plans for us are good (Jeremiah 29 ). This
passage also speaks about God’s forgiveness, intervention, and compassion. The thing Mom wanted all of us to take away was
the knowledge of these gifts from God that, when accepted, produce freedom. Freedom that enables us to see ourselves in a
new state (living in the light), having a new spirit (the power of God), and a
new status (purposed for good works). This freedom may seem like it takes a
long time to become reality but, the truth is, the minute we decide to believe…
it happens and we can live “Set Free to Be”. Our earthly circumstances may take
a little time to catch up, but truth is truth. When the smallest amount of
light shines into the darkness it is no longer dark; it is just dimly lit. And sometimes a little light is all you need
to see the path.
