We leave the house right on time but take a wrong turn. Then have to back
track to the point of the mistake losing 30 minutes of travel time. The prayer
= “God help me make this job interview on time!”
We worked late and didn’t study last weekend but tonight is the online
final exam. The prayer = “God please help me pass the test.”
We forgot to pay the electric bill and went to a fancy dinner instead.
Payday is a week away and the bill is overdue. The prayer = “God keep the
lights on.”
“What men usually ask of God when they pray is that 2 and 2
not make 4.” Anonymous
~ Can God arrange the universe so we make that
interview?
~ Can God provide insight we didn’t gain by studying
so that we pass the test?
~ Is God capable of providing the funds to pay the
bill, even when we frivilously spent the money He’d already given us?

But, how do we balance faith in God’s supernatural
powers with the due consequences of reaping what we sow?
The anwers lies in truth. In Psalm 145:18 we read, “The Lord is near to
all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” (NIV)
To call on Him in truth doesn’t mean we can’t make
mistakes; we all do. Is also doesn’t mean we have to have it all together
before we ask for help; none of us are at that level. Jesus taught us to pray (Matthew 6:9-13) your kingdom come and your will be done, as well as forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Having your will be done and needing forgiveness included in the model of prayer tells us that we will fall short, we will need to be reminded of God’s will and we will need His kingdom to invade our world again and again. So when we pray let’s adjust our prayers a bit... Compare these prayers below to those listed at the beginning:
* We leave the house right on time but take a wrong turn. Then have to
back track to the point of the mistake loosing 30 minutes of travel time. The
prayer = “God you know my needs. If this
job is part of your plan please arrange my travels and my mistake to fit into
your plan!”
* We worked late and didn’t study last weekend but tonight is the online
final exam. The prayer = “God I know I was not faithful to do my part in studying
for this test. You know my heart and how important this class is to my future.
Please give me your wisdom and help me do well. I trust that you know best so I
will trust the outcome.”
* We forgot to pay the electric bill and went to a fancy dinner instead.
Payday is a week away and the bill is overdue. The prayer = You fill in the
blank using this new way of thinking ____________________________________
Last year when I ran across this quote about prayers of 2 + 2 not
equalling 4, I was excited to see what God would teach us when the day came to
blog on this topic. I forgot its typical of God to use my week as a life lesson
of the upcoming blog topic. The prayers at the beginning of this blog were
similar versions of my prayers this week. I can report that 2 + 2 did make 4,
and 2 + 2 did not equal 4 this week. Why?
Because God is good all the time. And all the time God is good.

Lord, I believe in your supernatural power.
I also believe in the importance of truth. Today, I dedicate my life to
following truth and to do your will. I also promise to be a good steward of the
blessings you provide. I love you and want to be used as a vessel to display
your glory. I invite the Holy Spirit to guide my prayers so they are founded in
truth and build faith in my spirit as well as others in witness of my life.**
