Right Handed Honor

According to a 2014 study, right-handed people have higher cognitive skills, less behavioral and speech problems, less often have learning disabilities, and more often graduate their school.

Studies in the U.K., U.S. and Australia have revealed that Left-handers’ brains are structured differently from right-spatial relations and emotions in more diverse and potentially creative ways. Also, a slightly larger number of left-handers than right-handers are especially gifted in music and math.

So what’s the high value placed on the right hand of God all about?  The Bible has several words translated to "right" and several using the term, "right hand". These translations range from a direction, to the opposite of wrong, to what is just, what conforms to the established standard, and to a place of honor or authority. Traditionally, at the right hand has meant “a person of high rank who put someone on his right hand and gives him equal honor with himself and recognizes him as possessing equal dignity and authority”.

The key word here is, “traditionally”.  We have seen in our history, when someone is different they can be outcast from society and even branded as evil. If we are all made in God’s image, doesn’t it make sense that some of us would be left-handed? Yes, of course.  Because of this rarity, left-handedness may have been given a bad reputation and right-handedness given a preference throughout human history. I assert, therefore, writers and the prophets of God used “the right hand” to explain the importance of the position of honor near God to give us context in a way we would understanding.

Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature,

and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

Hebrews 1:3

If we leave out the right or left for a moment, what we see is a position of honor. Jesus is not the only one that can hold a position of honor with God. We can too, but to get to that place of honor we need to do a few things.

1  We can never make ourselves pure enough to be in God’s presence.  This holiness only comes as we are found IN Christ.  We are found in Christ by combination of our belief and His blood so the Father only sees the glory of the Son.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father,

Jesus Christ - the righteous. 1 John 2:1

2   We must live Christ-LIKE.  When we chose to live according to Gods ways we unlock a secret that frees us from being slaves to sin and gives us the way to live like Jesus did. When on earth, He gave up his deity to become human and completely dependent on the Father’s guidance. The secret is for us to live this same way.

So Jesus said to them,

‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord,

but only what he sees the Father doing.

For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.”

John 5:19

3   We must WAIT for his timing. God is never late and He’s never early. When He comes to do His thing we have to be in the right position to receive instruction, favor, and guidance.  I heard a pastor one time liken this positioning to driving on the freeway.  Exiting at the correct off ramp means you first need to be on the right road, attentive to the signs, then move into the correct lane, then… wait. God is faithful to show up. You cannot, however, make your own road, create your own signs, and decide when to exit. That would be making yourself equal to God in His power. Being in a position of honor is not to take the throne but be near the throne and favored by the Father.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God

so that at the proper time he may exalt you.”

1 Peter 5:6

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from the city, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of God?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Los Angeles and in all Long Beach and Sacramento, even to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:4-8

Lord, help me always to be mindful of your good ways; remind me, because you hold my right hand, I shall not be shaken. When I think of you, Father, my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices. You are who you are and I am secure. For you will not abandon my soul, or let your honored one see corruption. You make known to me the roads of life; in your presence there is a fullness of unspeakable joy; at your right hand is everything I need and want. My soul clings to you and your right hand upholds me. (Psalm 63:8, Psalm 16:8-11)
