The milestone has come. I’m
turning 50 today. A few years ago I wondered what God would say to me if I
looked up all the Bible verse of my birthdate – 12:6. You can also do this type
of study with any holiday. I’ve done the same study for the birthdays of my
kids and my hubby.
I truly believe in the Bible as the living word
of God and that God uses His word to speak to us with new revelations at
different times of our lives, even with the same verse. Most of us tend to be
drawn to the poetic, happy words but we need to also listen to all of the words
of God to gain the most of what He has to say.
So, if a verse doesn’t make sense, read the sections surrounding it and
spend more time studying the meaning. Also, ask God what that could mean and
what He wants you to hear.
The Bible tells us that the
word of God is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training. As I
read through the 33 verses for my birthdate I found these four that represented
the usefulness of God’s word in my life.
Teaching:
Numbers 12:6 The Lord said, “Listen to my words: When there is a prophet among
you,
I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams.”
My
lesson – God speaks to people in their own unique ways as well as proven ways.
Rebuking: John 12:4-6 But
one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
“Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a
year’s wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because
he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was
put into it.
My lesson – Watch
your motives.
Correcting: 1st Samuel 12:6-7
Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and
Aaron and brought your ancestors up out of Egypt. Now then, stand here, because
I am going to confront you with evidence before the Lord as to all the
righteous acts performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.
My lesson –
God is faithful. When in doubt remember His works and promises fulfilled.
Training: 1st Kings 12:6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the
elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you
advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
My lesson – Listen to wise counsel of the
elders.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the
servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2nd Timothy 3:16-17 New International Version
