As we end the Christmas season and head into a new year
we would do well to remember that we would not have a Christmas at all without
the Love of a Father; making provisions to pay our debt, and the Love of a
Friend; laying down his life for ours. Christmas, by definition, is a
church service to celebrate the birth of a savior – Christ’s Mass. The
highest honor we can give as a celebration of Christ is to follow His
commandment given in John 15:12-13. “This is my commandment, that you love
one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than
this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” This whole chapter in the book of John is
a wonderful outline of how to live a life full of love and joy. Since God is
love if we live in Him, love is the fruit produced and joy overflows.
In 2009 I was given an article that spoke of this abiding
lifestyle. It was by Gary Goodell from Third Day Churches, San Diego. The writer asked “ Where does Jesus live at
your house (heart), Is He in the guest room occasionally, or is He a resident –
free to move about in every room?” The writer goes on to caution that
Jesus should not be a weekend visitor or just a handyman you call when you need
help but instead He should be the one from which all life flows in the house.
It’s the difference between habitation and visitation. Gary states, “We
no longer do devotions and go to meetings but instead enter into a lifestyle of
full communion and connection with God.”
Verse 4 of John 15 begins with the words, “Abide in me
and I in you”. This indicates it’s a mutual relationship. Also, in
verse 15 Jesus tells us that this relationship is a friendship, no longer like master
to servant. Jesus likens this relationship to the vine and the branches. The
vine gives life to the branches so it can bear the vines fruit. Each one needs
the other. This friendship aspect can be a bit confusing when He also uses the
word commandment but if we look at verse 10 Jesus explains that He too followed
the commandments of the Father. Following a commandment is about honoring the
relationship; Parent/child or friend. Honor is a way to express love. The only
way to truly abide with each other is to have love as a bond.
In verse 11 Jesus gives us a blessing of Joy. The
Merry we say to one another at Christmas is also a blessing of Joy because Merry
also means “Joyful”. So today I pray for you... a lifestyle of Joyful Christ Mass filled with
God’s abiding Love all through this next year.
" Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear
fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you
abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides
in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can
do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like
a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and
burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask
according to the will of God, and it will be done for you. 8 By this
my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my
disciples.
9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have
kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love. 11 These things
I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his
friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his
master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from
my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I
chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your
fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give
it to you.” John 15:4-16 English Standard Version (ESV)
