Her Name Was Lola

I have smart phone, as most of you do.  Some of you may even be well acquainted with the helpful smart assistant, Siri. You can ask Suri virtually anything and she will answer you.  Most of the time with helpful information, but sometimes all you get is, “I’m sorry I didn’t understand”.   I call my smart phone assistant, “Lola”.  I only use her for guiding me to unfamiliar destinations using my map app.

The other day I peeled off from Lola’s route to go into a fast food drive thru.  She was not happy.  She repeatedly said, in a harsh tone I might add, “Return to Course!”  I ignored her.  It made me wonder, how many times I hear the voice of God saying the same thing and I ignored Him? Now, God is no comparison to Lola – how could she know I was hungry?” But God does know us, He knows our needs, and knows the road ahead; even better than Lola.

This experience reminded me of a story I heard many years ago about a stubborn ship’s captain.

On a foggy night at sea, the ship's captain saw what appeared to be the lights of another ship heading toward them. He instructed his signalman to contact the other ship by signal light. He sent the message, "Change your course ten degrees to the north." The reply came, “Change your course ten degrees to the south." The captain responded, “I am a captain. Change your course ten degrees to the north." Response: “I am a seaman first class. You change your course ten degrees to the south." The captain was furious. He had his signalman reply, “I am a battleship. You change your course ten degrees to the north." Reply: “You change your course ten degrees to the south.” I am a lighthouse."

It helps to know who we are taking instruction from.  God is certainly a trustworthy source. Even if we don’t understand the guidance, following His ever sure light will never fail us. People and Lol have their limits. Even our own minds have their limits.  God is Love and Love never fails.

**Lord, I know I can trust you. Give me an ear to hear your voice more clearly. Let me see the light of your guidance on my journey. Forgive me for being stubborn and bring to my attention when I leave the route and need to “return to the course”. For you have set before me, and planned for my good, the turns and straightaways. I love you and will look only to you for guidance.**

“Look, I’m ready to pour out my spirit on you; I’m ready to tell you all I know. As it is, I’ve called, but you’ve turned a deaf ear; I’ve reached out to you, but you’ve ignored me. Start with God—the first step in learning is bowing; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning. First pay attention, and then relax. Now you can take it easy—you’re in good hands.” verses from Proverbs Chapter 1 in The Message.
